Dating while trans in India: what actually helps

Disclosure, safety, the questions people ask, and how to find people who are looking for you specifically rather than tolerating you incidentally.

Most dating advice for trans people is written for countries where the hard part is a rude message. Here the hard parts are different, and this is about those.

Disclosure is yours to time

There is no rule that you must say you are trans before a first message, a first date, or ever. There is a safety argument for saying it before you meet in person, which is not about honesty — it is that a person who reacts badly should do so on a screen, not in a room. Where that line falls is your decision.

On this app you can set your gender as "Man" or "Woman" on your card and still be shown to people who have specifically said they want to meet trans men or trans women. Those are two separate settings on purpose: how you are labelled and how you are matched do not have to be the same thing.

The questions

You will be asked about surgery, about your body, about your old name, about whether you "have" anything. You do not owe answers. A good response that closes the door without a fight: "I don't talk about that with people I've just met." Somebody who pushes past that has told you what the rest of the evening would be like.

Fetishisation

You will meet people whose interest in you begins and ends with your being trans. Some of them are decent and some are not, and the tell is whether they are curious about anything else. A profile that says "trans only" with nothing else on it is a profile about a category, not a person. You are allowed to pass.

Safety, specifically

  • Public first meeting, always. Every rule in the blackmail guide applies with more force. Trans people are targeted more often, and the threat used is more often violence than exposure.
  • Video call first, and pay attention to how they react to your voice and your face. That reaction in a café is harder to leave.
  • Tell a friend where you are, and agree a check-in time.
  • Your own transport, both ways.
  • If it goes wrong: the Transgender Persons Act, 2019 makes violence and abuse against a transgender person a specific offence. Trans-led organisations in the directory know the police stations that take it seriously and the ones that do not.

Documents and names

Your ID may carry a name and gender marker that are not yours. On this app the verified badge is optional, and if you do apply for one, a reviewer is instructed that a mismatch between your document and your profile is not a reason to reject you — the check is a face and an age, nothing else. Your profile name is whatever you say it is.

Finding people who are looking for you

The single most useful thing an app can do for a trans person is filter in both directions: show you only to people who have said they want to meet someone like you, and show you only people who fit what you asked for. That is how matching works here. It does not remove every bad interaction. It removes the ones where somebody had not thought about it until you were in front of them, which is most of them.
