The first-date checklist, for queer people in India

Twelve things that take two minutes and make a first meeting boring, which is the goal. Print it, screenshot it, send it to the friend who never listens.

Boring is the goal. A first date that goes well is a coffee with a stranger; a first date that goes badly is a story you tell a helpline. Everything below is what separates them, and none of it is hard.

Before

  1. Video call first. Camera on, clothes on, five minutes. If they refuse for weeks, that is your answer.
  2. Search their photos. Reverse image search. Twenty seconds.
  3. Keep it in the app until you meet. Moving to WhatsApp on day one is a pattern, not a compliment.
  4. Pick the place yourself. Somewhere public, busy, and known to you. A café or a mall in daylight. Never a flat, never a hotel, never "a friend's place".
  5. Tell one person. Who, where, when you expect to be done. Share live location.
  6. Agree a check-in. A message at a set time, and what your friend does if it does not come.

During

  1. Your own transport, both ways. Do not get into their car, and do not depend on them to get home.
  2. Watch your drink. Order it yourself, keep it with you.
  3. Do not go to a second location. "Let's go somewhere quieter" on a first date is a no. If it is going well, there will be a second date.
  4. Leave whenever you want. "I'm going to head off" is a complete sentence. You owe nobody an explanation or a full evening.

After

  1. Message your friend that you are home.
  2. If anything felt wrong, report it. On the app, and if a crime happened, to the police. Keep the chat.

The one rule that matters most

Never, for any reason, send money to somebody you have not met, and never send intimate photographs to somebody you have not met. Every scam that targets queer people in this country starts with one of those two. The full guide explains why.
