How to spot fake profiles on dating apps (AI photos included)

A fake profile is the first step of almost every dating-app scam in India, from the honey trap to the "stuck at customs" money story. In August 2026 Hyderabad Police warned that scammers now build profiles from photographs so polished that some are made by AI (m9). The good news is that fakes still leave the same traces. Here is how to find them in under five minutes.

1. Search the photos

Long-press a profile photo, or screenshot it, and search it with Google Lens or TinEye. Stolen photos usually come from Instagram accounts with many followers, from models' portfolios, or from stock sites. If the same face turns up under another name, you have your answer. No match is not proof the profile is real, which is what the next steps are for.

2. Look for AI tells

AI-generated faces have improved, but most still slip somewhere:

• Too perfect, every time. Studio lighting and flawless skin in every photo, with no candid, blurry or badly framed picture anywhere in the set. Real people have one bad photo.
• The edges. Earrings that do not match, glasses that melt into hair, teeth that run together, ears that differ in shape.
• Hands and text. Fingers that bend oddly or blur, and writing in the background, on signs or T-shirts, that looks like letters but reads as nothing.
• The background. Rooms and streets that warp, lines that should be straight and are not, or a background that is simply a soft blur in every photo.
• The same face, different ages. Photos that are all the same age, the same expression and the same angle.

3. Read the chat, not only the photos

Hyderabad Police's list of warning signs matches what we see: a fast move to WhatsApp or Telegram, fast declarations of feelings, and a story that ends in a request for money, whether a registration fee, a gift, a hotel booking or a medical emergency. Any one of these is a flag. Two together is a pattern. Our eleven red flags go through the rest.

4. The two-minute video call

The single most reliable test. Ask for a short video call before you meet, cameras on, clothes on. A real person who wants to meet you will do it. A fake will have a new reason every time: bad network, broken camera, at work, shy. Three excuses is a no. Never let a video call become sexual with someone you have not met; that is how sextortion recordings are made.

5. Never send money

Whatever the story, whoever it is. Nobody you have not met in person needs money from you. If you have already sent some, report it at cybercrime.gov.in or call 1930 the same day, because banks can sometimes freeze the receiving account if you are quick.

What a verified badge means, and what it does not

Verification helps, which is why the keyword "verified profiles" matters to people. But a badge proves only what the app checked. On most apps that is a selfie matched against profile photos, which confirms the person in the photos exists and took a selfie. On Rangmel, verification is optional and goes further: a live capture of three frames that cannot be uploaded from a saved photo, compared by a person against a government document and the profile photos. Even so, a badge is not a background check. A verified person can still behave badly, and an unverified one is not suspicious; many queer people in India choose not to hand an ID to any app. Use the badge as one signal among five, not as permission to skip the other four. If you find a fake
