Coffee date ideas in Pune: easy, low-pressure first meets
Six Pune cafés with a record of welcoming LGBTQ+ people, including queer-run Stories Café in Koregaon Park, plus how to plan an easy first coffee with someone from an app.
A coffee is the perfect first date: short enough to end politely, long enough to know whether you want a second. Pune has a good spread of cafés that welcome queer people, from one founded and run by queer people to quiet book cafés where you can actually hear each other.

The cafés
1. Stories Café, Koregaon Park
Founded and run by queer people as a safe space for the LGBTQIA+ community to spend time, share stories and find their people, according to LBB. The obvious first choice.
2. Café Bahār by Khuzaan, Wanowrie
An inclusive community café whose owner is known for giving each guest a handwritten quote. Warm and personal, and a conversation starter in itself.
3. Bean Social, Viman Nagar
Described by LBB as a cosy, queer-friendly space. Convenient if you are both on the airport side of the city.
4. Tanoshii Café, S.B. Road
Tucked into the lanes off S.B. Road, with couches and cushions and plenty of room, and regular events. One of the cosiest cafés in the city, according to The Bridge Chronicle.
5. Waari Book Café, Kothrud
A literary café with plush seating. If you are both readers, the shelves do half the talking.
6. Mauji Time Café, Bhosle Nagar
A pay-by-the-hour space with unlimited drinks, a library and an art studio, built around letting people "be who you want to be". Good for a longer, more relaxed second meeting.
Making the first coffee easy
- Afternoon, somewhere busy. One coffee. If it goes well, you can always order a second.
- Get there yourself, by metro, bus or your own cab, both ways.
- Tell a friend where you are and who you are meeting, and share your live location.
- Split the bill. Two coffees is the easiest bill there is to split.
- Consent is ongoing. The café is welcoming; the road outside may not be. Follow the more cautious person's lead.
- Have an exit line. "I have a call at five" is enough.
