First date ideas in Chennai: cafés and walks for two
Relaxed, public first dates in Chennai: Chamiers Café in Adyar, Amethyst in Royapettah, an evening at Besant Nagar, and how to plan a first meeting that is safe and easy to leave.
Chennai rewards slow dates: a long lunch in a garden café, a walk by the sea when the heat breaks. Here are a few places where queer people have long felt at ease, and how to make a first meeting simple.

The ideas
1. Chamiers Café, Adyar
Described as a quiet queer institution, the kind of place where two women can have a slow lunch and not feel watched, with a bookshop next door and a reliably calm atmosphere. The easiest first date in the city.
2. Amethyst Café, Royapettah
A heritage bungalow with garden seating, where Chennai's creative and queer crowds overlap. Order a cold coffee and stay a while; the garden makes long conversations easy.
3. An evening at Besant Nagar
The neighbourhood around Elliot's Beach has a younger crowd and plenty of cafés, and it is known as a relaxed gathering spot for queer people, especially on weekend evenings. It is still a public beach in Chennai: keep affection low-key, stay where it is busy, and head home together or separately before it gets late.
4. A screening or a Pride event
Chennai Rainbow Pride usually marches in June, and Orinam, one of the city's longest-running queer collectives, is linked with the march and with Chennai's queer film festival. The events around them make an easy second date.
Making the first date easy
- Lunch or late afternoon, somewhere busy.
- Get there yourself, by metro, bus or your own cab, both ways.
- Tell a friend where you are and who you are meeting, and share your live location.
- Split the bill, or take turns.
- Consent is ongoing. Follow the more cautious person's lead, especially outside.
- Have an exit line. "Amma wants me home for dinner" is a classic for a reason.
