Long drive date routes from Bengaluru: day trips for two
Nandi Hills at sunrise, the Skandagiri trek with a forest permit, and the Chunchi Falls and Mekedatu road: three day trips from Bengaluru for couples who have already met, with timings, permits and safety.
A long drive is one of the best dates Bengaluru has to offer: early start, empty roads, a sunrise, breakfast on the way back. It is also not a first date. A first meeting with someone from an app should be in a busy café in the city, where you can both leave whenever you like; the first-date checklist explains why. Once you have met, trust each other, and want a whole morning together, these three routes are the classics.

The routes
1. Nandi Hills, about 60 km
The sunrise drive. Roughly one and a half to two hours from the city, open from 6 am to 10 pm, with a vehicle entry fee at the gate. The sunrise over the fog is the reason to go, and October to March is the best season. Access has been restricted for roadworks and on some holidays, including New Year's Eve in past years, so check the news the day before.
2. Skandagiri, about 62 km
A sunrise trek near Nandi Hills, and the most memorable of the three if you both like walking. Entry is by permit only, booked on the Karnataka Forest Department's Aranya Vihaara portal: pick the district Chikkaballapura and the Skandagiri trek. Slots are limited, groups are escorted by a guide, and you need government photo ID. Book several days ahead for a weekend. Without a permit you will be turned away.
3. Chunchi Falls, Mekedatu and Sangama, about 90 to 100 km
South along Kanakapura Road, a full-day drive through rocky river country. Chunchi Falls comes first, then Sangama, where the rivers meet, and Mekedatu, a narrow gorge. Beautiful, and genuinely dangerous: the river looks calm and is not. Do not enter the water at Mekedatu, whatever others are doing.
Making the day easy
- Only with someone you have already met, ideally more than once, and only if you both want to.
- Tell a friend the route, who you are with, and when you expect to be back. Share your live location for the day.
- Fuel, water and a charged phone. Network drops on stretches of all three routes.
- Split fuel, tolls and food. Agree before you leave, so nobody is keeping score in the car.
- Consent is ongoing, in the car and out of it. Either of you can call it a day at any point, and the other drives back without argument.
- Be home before dark. The roads are easier and the day ends on a high.
