Gay dating app safety tips for India: 12 rules before you meet

Using a gay dating app in India is legal, most dates are uneventful, and the harm that does happen is not random. It follows three patterns, and twelve habits beat all of them. None of this depends on which app you use.

First, the law

Consensual sex between adult men has been legal since the Supreme Court's Navtej Singh Johar judgment of September 2018, and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita that replaced the IPC in 2024 has no equivalent of Section 377. Nobody can be arrested for being gay, for being on a dating app, or for meeting someone from one. The rights guide has the case names. That matters, because the people who hurt men on these apps rely on their victims believing the opposite.

The three things that actually go wrong

The set-up meeting. Someone keen to meet at your place or theirs, fast. At the meeting there are others, claiming to be family or police, and a demand for money. The photo or video. An intimate picture or call before you have met, followed by a threat to send it to your contacts. Being outed by accident. An exact distance, a notification preview on your lock screen, a recognisable app icon on a shared phone. The first two are crimes, and the blackmail and extortion guide covers exactly what to do. The twelve rules

1. Video-call before you meet. Two minutes, cameras on, clothes on. It confirms the person matches the photos, and set-up crews avoid it.
2. First meeting in a public place. A busy café, a mall, daylight if you can. Never a flat or a hotel room the first time, however nice the chat was.
3. Get yourself there and back. Your own cab or the metro, not a pick-up from them.
4. Tell one friend. Who, where, when, and share your live location until you are home.
5. No intimate photos to anyone you have not met. Not cropped, not "just one". This single rule removes most sextortion.
6. Keep the chat on the app until you have met. Pressure to move to WhatsApp or Telegram on day one is a pattern, not romance. On Rangmel, numbers and links are hidden in chat for this reason.
7. Reverse-search the photos. Twenty seconds with Google Lens. Photos that are too polished may be AI; the fake-profile guide shows the tells.
8. Never send money. Not for a ticket, a fee, an emergency or a gift. Anybody you have not met who asks for money is the scam.
9. Hide your distance and your previews. Turn off exact distance in the app and message previews in your phone's notification settings.
10. Lock the app. A PIN or biometric lock on the app itself, not only the phone. On Rangmel it is free.
11. Screenshot anything that feels off. Profile, chat, numbers. Evidence you did not need costs nothing; evidence you deleted cannot be recovered.
12. Report and block, then walk away. In the app first. If money or threats are involved, cybercrime.gov.in or 1930 the same day.

What a safer app does for you

Several of these rules are things an app could do by default: blur your photo until you choose who sees it, round your distance, hide phone numbers in chat, put an exit button on every screen, make the lock free.
